Looking For A New Asian Market :(

Well, as I expected the asian grocery by my house closed. It had been open less than a year, but the last time I was there they had greatly reduced their stock and there was almost no one there. So, since we were plum out of organs I went on the hunt. I tried 3 markets today: 99 Ranch Market @ Gale and Nogales, Greenland Market @ Colima (almost to Nogales), and HK Super Market on Colima (almost to fullerton rd.). None of them left me very impressed. While I found most of what I was looking for I was unable to locate spleen of any variety, which was disappointing. Only HK Super Market had heart, and Greenland had no organs other than liver at all, and a very small selection of meat in general. 99 Ranch was okay; to be honest I was expecting more since they are a large chain of asian grocery stores.

Anyway, I came home with the following (all weights +/-):

  • 3lb lamb shoulder
  • 3.5lb cornish game hens
  • 3lb duck leg quarters
  • 2lb chicken feet
  • 1lb pork liver
  • 2lb pork kidney
  • 1lb chicken gizzard
  • 2lb pork heart
  • 1lb chicken heart
So, I got all that for $32! The lamb shoulder was a splurge @ $8, but I’m thinking of buying a 30lb box of them from SCB next time I need lamb, and since I’ve never fed them before I thought it best to get one before I buy a huge box of it to see how it works out for the girls. The duck ($6/2lbs) was also a little pricey, but it’s been a long time since they’ve had it, so I thought it would be a nice treat for them; they’ll be having it for dinner tonight. The game hens were actually .99c/lb, which is as excellent price; I’ll eventually feed them as a “chicken” meal one of these days.

Have you checked out Gonzales’ Northgate Market. I noticed on their website they have different San Diego locations. I go to a local store here in LA area and find quite a selection for my pups,
